MEET THE CANDIDATE
- Tanya Cook was born into a military family on November 9, 1964 on the island of Guam. The youngest of three children and only daughter of Clidie and Rufus Cook.
- In 1966, Rufus, a civil engineer in the Air Force moved to Omaha to be stationed at Offutt Air Force Base. Clidie Cook was particularly excited to continue her teaching
career in Omaha because of the outstanding reputation of its public school system.
- Tanya is a proud graduate of the Omaha Public School district, she attended Nathan Hale Junior High School and Omaha Central High School.
- After graduating from CHS in 1982, Tanya moved to Washington, DC to attend Georgetown University where she majored in International Business.
- After graduation she began her career in New York City, working first for NW Ayer advertising agency on the AT&T, Citicorp and DeBeers accounts and eventually transitioning into media and public relations work for non-profit organizations.
- It was in New York that Tanya first connected to her passion for public service by working
closely with the fundraising director for Mayor David Dinkins' first race.
- Since returning to Nebraska, Tanya has worked on a number of campaign staffs including,
Brenda Council for City Council, Brenda Council for Mayor and Ben Nelson for Senate.
Her reputation for fairness, hard work and a heart for community interest earned her an
appointment to the personal staffs of both Governor Mike Johanns and Dave Heineman.
- Her record of public service is rivaled by her volunteer efforts with such organizations and

- Omaha Public Library Foundation Board
- Girls Incorporated Board
- Florence Kiwanis
- North Omaha Commercial Club
- Governor’s Omaha Advisory Council for Lead Safe

- Leadership Omaha Alumni Association
- American Council of Young Political Leaders
- A recognized community leader, Tanya has received the Omaha Jaycees' “Ten
Outstanding Young Omahans” award, a Rotary International Foundation Award as well as
two awards from the Omaha Press Club.
- Tanya is the president of City Girl Communications, a strategic communications and public
relations consulting group which specializes in serving governmental and non-profit clients.
- When she is not running City Girl, volunteering or lending support to her family, Tanya
enjoys movies, golf and travel.
